work in progress - studio view

today, instead of putting up a small work,
thought I'ld share some work in progress.
I'll try and take a few photos as I go along,
to give a sense of how the painting is created.

currently working on a bunch of pieces for an upcoming valentine's show.
the title derives from a piece of text from an old school primer.
I love these - they are like mysterious little poems.

when I started this blog, it was with the idea of creating a structure and discipline, to improve my drawing and painting, and to teach myself how to paint with oils, of which I am very intimidated.
I wanted to do representational paintings, to have that practice.

Here is my first oil painting in a very, very, very long time.
I have absolutely no idea what I am doing, AND I have naples yellow all over my face.
(I also have renewed admiration and respect for those who have mastered this gooey medium)

The titles of the abstract pieces ofiten derive from something in the text of the piece.
There's a tiny bit of an english/italian dictionary (the little yellowy rectangle), with the word "posdomani" - the day after tomorrow. I like that they have a specific word for that, and the poetic, sad and hopeful feeling it conveys in english.

taken from a photograph on the cover of today's Chronicle.

I once had the idea of a painting a day, taken from an image from that day's NY Times, proof that the painting was indeed created that day.
